Tacoma Lawn Improvement Spotlight: Chris’ “Dad-in-Law”
A Father’s Day Gift – Complete Lawn Renovation!
Back in September, our Turf Specialist Chris gifted his “Dad-in-Law” a complete lawn renovation and the results were absolutely incredible! Chris’ Dad-in-Law was concerned about the ability of his soil to retain water and nutrients. His lawn also contained an unsightly mixture of the different types of grass that did not fare well in the scorching summer heat.
Chris recognized this as an opportunity to bond with the father of his beloved bride and they rolled up their sleeves over a warm and sunny weekend to give the yard a facelift using our Fall Lawn Renovation Program.
How They Did It:
Since the area of the yard was less than 1000 square feet, Chris decided that the best approach would be to remove all of the existing turf and start from scratch Vs aerating and dethatching what was currently there. Chris first went to work removing all of the existing turf using a Sod-Cutter (a handy machine you can rent from a home improvement center that slices up sod like butter). Removing the existing turf gave them a clean slate to work with so they could concentrate on improving the health of the soil.
Dealing with a Root Infestation
After pulling back the turf, Chris and his Dad-in-Law discovered a large infestation of roots from a nearby maple tree that needed to be removed from the soil where the new turf was to grow. Chris dug-in and removed select off-shooting roots, up to 10 inches down in some spots, careful not to disturb any main roots that the tree needed to live and be healthy.
Loosening the Soil
Next, the guys rototilled the exposed soil to loosen it up and get oxygen down below the surface, which was needed for beneficial microbial activity. By loosening up the soil, the roots of the new grass will be able to dig deep down into the soil so that they can absorb more nutrients, soak up water when the surface of the soil is dry, and build a healthy foundation for lush green grass to grow.
Conditioning the Soil and Applying Organic Soil Builder, Liquid & Granular Fertilizer
An application of AxisDE™ and HuMagic® Granular was mixed into the tilled soil to improve its water retention capacity and airflow, to make nutrients more available to the grass, and to prevent it from compacting again later on in the future. The soil was then leveled out and Humagic® Liquid, and OceanMagic™ Liquid was applied to the surface, along with another sprinkling of AxisDE™ for good measure.
Chris next applied a generous amount of Complete 6-4-4™ to the surface of the soil to provide the grass with a healthy dose of nutrients. Any nutrients not used by the grass during the initial stages of growth will over winter and will be available during the early part of spring when the grass comes out of dormancy.
Adding the Turf Seed
Last, but certainly not least, Chris and his “dad-in-law” added the final dressing onto the soil…the new grass seed! They used our Sun & Shade Premium Turf Seed which is a premium mixture of Perennial Rye, Chewings Fescue, and Creeping Red Fescue that grows well in many different environments. They then sprayed a layer of Humagic® Liquid, and OceanMagic™ on top of the seed followed by adding a light layer of peat moss.
At the end of the day, the soon-to-be new lawn resembled an earthy tiramisu of sorts that will fill out to be rich and green healthy turf.
This lawn renovation proved to be a wild success almost immediately. The turf seed began to sprout within 5-6 days providing instant beautiful green color to the yard. Within 11 days of the lawn renovation, the grass had soared to 2 inches in height and no longer contained an unfavorable mixture of yard salad. Chris scored big points with his Dad-in-Law and the yard became the envy of the neighborhood!
Approximately two weeks after the initial turf renovation was complete, Chris paid his Dad-in-Law another visit, this time armed with Nitrogen Plus™. An application was spread all over the new turf because the nitrate will stimulate a quick growth before winter arrives, and make sure it has a healthy dose of nutrients to carry it over until next spring.
